If I told people it would work I should as a manufacturer give the warranty to them that it will indeed work. If I had a company and would identify a scenario which 2 people does I would also tell people that it won't work.

Testing software upgrades /downgrades just cost lots of money.
CANON 7D FIRMWARE UPDATE 2014 UPGRADE
They even say sometimes it is not recommended to upgrade from version x to version x+2 because they don't test every possibility but only the ones many people would do. If a manufacturer says upgrading your firmware from version x to version x+1 will work that means only they tested the upgrade process and they found it be fine. Consider how many people go the way of downgrading. Why not? It would cost lots of money and the invest would not be on pair with the outcome. To tell people downgrading will work Canon should run software tests for that scenario which they apparently don't do. It's simple why Canon doesn't support downgrading or why they say it won't work. Wonder why Canon said you couldn't do it? I would not have tried. I just wanted some other feedback about that downgrade. So for that point, as Austin said, Canon is wrong. I must be fortunate because I have never had to do any micro-adjustments on my 7D MK2.so far. It's not a proper answer. However, for a stationary subject like the polar bear it shouldn't make too much of a difference. With Ai-Servo the setup you choose can play a part - how many AF points and what Case you choose. However, if you go through the above checks and all photos are still soft, then maybe it has to do with the micro-adjustment. Process of elimination based on an educated guess. I usually test my theory by shooting at a closer subject in a more simple AF setting. As mentioned, atmospheric haze can play a part as I have encountered shooting in such conditions with soft photos. If still not sharp, let's eliminate another possible cause. If I were to get soft photos of a subject, say like those polar bears, test a closer subject keeping in mind the MFD and lessen variables by putting AF to single point and take it off Ai-Servo. That's why my Tree Swallows were soft.they were treading ever so slightly inside the MFD. Fast moving subjects could easily breach that MFD without you knowing especially if you are at the edge of where that MFD is to begin with. Aha! Although it looks like the Tree Swallows were far enough away and outside the MFD but based on results I over-estimated their distance. Check my AF distance setting on the 400 5.6L. Focus on something stationary that is further away. Was photographing Tree Swallows in flight recently with the 7D MK2 and 400 5.6L. Bought it from Camera Canada when it was released.
CANON 7D FIRMWARE UPDATE 2014 HOW TO
Lots of people are having issues that no how to take a sharp picture, this is a good read I do not agree with EJ, there is still a problem, if you get a good copy its great but I have tried some that are just plan awful. Thanks so much Neily, I suffered the same issue as you using it with my 500mm and my 300mm as well, appreciate your time for talking about this! Kind regards from Costa Rica! For 1400€ I would prefer a camera to work out of the box (with some obvious adjustments). Quite often there was no obvious focussed area.Ĭanon never officially announced a problem, but units which were sent in for AF problems mostly came back working. For me it was not the case, the bodies were just not working. Most problems were users error, 500mm lens and 1/200sec shutter speed.
CANON 7D FIRMWARE UPDATE 2014 UPDATE
There were many complaints in the early days, especially after the last firmware update (which is when some people started with problems) think it was 1.0.5. A lot can be put down to bad technique but I put it down to bad QC. Bearing in mind I was having to use the 1Dx with a TC side by side with the 7D2's and the 1Dx was flawless. I spent time calibrating, or trying to, and in the end sent them back. I tested the two brand new 7D2's (at least 12 months apart) that I had thoroughly, neither gave me a 1 in 10 hit rate, even on close subjects which move slowly.
